Thursday Movie Picks Television Edition: Globetrotting

Bringing you some globetrotting television shows this week. The idea is that the show is scripted, so non-reality, non-travel and non-docu series. Limiting it to scripted did out a wall up for me but I think we got there in the end. Also, how is it at the end of May already? Gosh. It feels like just yesterday it was April and now we’re almost in June. I wanna say time flies but at the same time I have done nothing so… it feels more like it’s passing by and I’m just unaware of it. Anyway, on to my globetrotting picks.

3. MILE HIGH (2003 – 2005)

I have vague memories of this show but somehow they are all positive. Like I remember that I liked this show. Granted, I was most likely too young to watch a show hinting at the mile high club. But I guess my parents never really cared that much. Mile High essentially is a British show about people working as cabin crew and globetrotting. Out of all three I picked I think this one had the most globetrotting in it. I remember thinking what a fun job. You get to work but you also get to visit all these cool places. Most memorable for me is Adam Sinclair as Will. Cannot remember any of the story lines but I just remember really liking his character.

2. PAN AM (2011 – 2012)

Now this show is quite similar in a way that I hardly remember it. It ran for one season and shows that are not renewed usually do fade away in time. Pan Am is a period drama about the pilots and flight attendants who once made Pan Am the most glamorous way to fly. Similar to High Mile it has some drama and relationship stuff. Christina Ricci is the lead in this one season show and Margot Robbie is here too! For me though, Michael Mosley is the most memorable because I follow his career quite thoroughly these days. Anyway… an okay watch I guess.

1. THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT (2020 – …)

Okay it’s a bit of a stretch and also I think I’ve mentioned it before but there’s not a lot of shows about flight attendants! Anyway, this one belongs to HBO and is probably the best out of the bunch. It also has some crime and crazy editing going on. Plus Michiel Huisman is so hot! My god. Anyway, while there’s not a lot of globetrotting in here our main character still works as a flight attendant so it counts!

Love your theme within the theme! I use to adore flying but now its so fraught with inconveniences and belligerence that all the pleasure has been drained out of it.

They all sound like fun but the only one I’ve seen is Pan Am which I really liked, probably the kiss of death since almost every show that I become a regular viewer of gets cancelled rather quickly.

It is a narrow theme this week and I suppose I inadvertently ended up with a sort of theme within, vintage shows with problem solving leads, but it wasn’t my plan. With such limited choices I simply had to reach back to when the globetrotting theme was more popular.

It Takes a Thief (1968-1970)-Master cat burglar Alexander Mundy (Robert Wagner) is granted his release from prison on the proviso that he work with the US government using his particular skills to obtain sensitive info that they need to keep the world safe. Under the direction of agent Noah Bain (Malachi Thorne) who explains “Look Al, I’m not asking you to spy, I’m just asking you to steal!” Mundy jetted around the world to exotic locales on various jobs sometimes accompanied by his elegant thief of a father Alistair (Fred Astaire).

The Persuaders! (1971-1972)-After coming to blows in a bar fight fantastically rich globetrotting playboys English Lord Brett Sinclair (Roger Moore) and American Danny Wilde (Tony Curtis) are prevailed upon by the presiding judge to team up to use their distinctive expertise to solve crimes that have baffled the police. At first reluctant they soon become fast friends and adroit crime stoppers in far-flung spots around the world. The series only lasted a year because Moore departed to become the new James Bond.

Run for Your Life (1965-1968)-When attorney Paul Bryan (Ben Gazzara) is told by his doctor he has a terminal disease and will die within nine to eighteen months he decides he has a whole lot of livin’ to do and hits the road. Week after week Paul heads to a new place and new adventures as a man constantly on the move.

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who struggled this week. I haven’t seen any of your picks but The Flight Attendant is on my list.

I haven’t seen any of these but I love your theme within the theme. I heard nothing but great things about Pan Am and wanted to watch it only to find out it was cancelled. I know it was probably a good show.

I saw a bit of Pan Am…but because by the time the show landed on our shores…in those days probably a year or two late, I think I already knew it wasn’t renewed so didn’t bother really following it.
