Thursday Movie Picks Halloween Edition: Horror Movie Houses

It seemed like yesterday we were getting ready for 2019 Halloween but here we are again. Thursday Movie Picks focuses on horror in October and first up are horror movie houses. Now this seems to me more like a deco recommendation than a movie one. I love that though! So I dug deep and tried to think of horror movie houses that are creepy as hell. Putting aside the movies almost completely. So here are three horror movie houses that I would love to stay away from!

3. THAT HOUSE WITH AN ALIEN SPIDER-CLOWN THAT FEEDS ON KIDS IN THE BASEMENT aka IT: CHAPTER ONE (2017)

In past years I think I’ve recommended It: Chapter Two like twice now so it was about time I’d bring out the first movie. Though I guess the title there focuses on the overall duology and oh, spoilers. Anyway this house our gang of kids enter is not a nice one. I’d stay away. It’s designed to separate you and it has doors that don’t lead to happy places. Not to mention the well in the basement that takes to the alien-spider thing that feeds on kids. I mean, can you imagine being a realtor and selling a house in that house’s neighbourhood, geez.

2. WHEN DID AN ISOLATED CABIN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WOODS  NEVER NOT KILL ANYONE, HUH? aka THE CABIN IN THE WOODS (2011)

Honestly, it’s so easy to recommend this because the title says it all. If you have a freaking cabin in the woods you run the other way. Don’t go in. Ignore it! Don’t plan to stay in a cabin that’s located in the woods. It always make me wonder how these characters in these movies are not aware. Do horror movies not exist in these horror movie worlds? If they did people would ignore creepy cabins and going down to the pitch black basement. Anyway, that being said… the cabin is still kinda cute. I’d go there. Probably die first though and I’ll be the one nobody notices is gone because I’m that unpopular.

1. OH WELL THAT TREE HOUSE LOOKS CUTE BUT OH WAIT… NEVER MIND, I’VE LOST MY HEAD aka HEREDITARY (2018)

Tree houses count here because I really want to include this one here. Hereditary is without a doubt one of my favourite horror movies but the actual house is not that bad. Yes, there are bad stuff that happen there but the tree house, guys, it’s the goldmine! If all tree houses were like that no kid will ever play in it. Besides, the juxtaposition of taking something that usually means joy and adventure to kids, and turn it into a horror house. Brilliant. Plus as you can see all my picks are rather greenish which makes the gifs similar and ticks off the theme within a theme thing. Sort of.

    I feel like it’s a life rule to never stay in an old, run down, abandoned house. You’re just asking for trouble by staying there. I don’t actually remember much of Cabin in the Woods, but I do remember the characters being pretty clueless haha.

    I’ve come a cropper this week and haven’t seen any of these though I’ve heard of all three.

    I’m just not a horror fan which is going to make this month a challenge but I managed to find three that I liked by poking around and reaching back.

    The Haunting (1963)-Dr. John Markway (Richard Johnson) is doing research into psychic phenomena. In the service of that study he invites two women-lonely, eccentric Eleanor (Julie Harris) who has experienced supernatural events previously and brash Theodora (Claire Bloom) who is gifted with ESP. On arrival they are joined by the mansion’s heir, cynical Luke (Russ Tamblyn) and are immediately overwhelmed by strange sounds and events. Soon Eleanor comes to believe the house is alive and speaking directly to her. Loaded with atmosphere and extremely well-acted.

    You’ll Find Out (1940)-Debutante Janis Bellacrest (Helen Parrish) books Kay Kyser and his big band, the Kollege of Musical Knowledge including singer Ginny Simms and cornet playing sidekick Ish Kabibble to play at her 21st birthday party at a remote spooky mansion. Between performances, Kay finds Janis’s guests-quirky Aunt Margo (Alma Kruger), pretentious professor Fenniger (Peter Lorre), creepy Prince Soliano (Bela Lugosi) and irritable Judge Mainwaring (Boris Karloff) on the bizarre side and begins to suspect that Janis is in danger. When a powerful storm blows in and strands everyone overnight events both scary and wacky transpire. Goofy musical comic/thriller is the only onscreen pairing of Lorre, Karloff and Lugosi.

    Seven Footprints of Satan (1929)-When mayhem breaks out at her father’s party Eve (Thelma Todd) and her fiancée Jim (Creighton Hale) jump into a limousine and think they are safely away from danger. Shortly afterwards though they find themselves at the house of “Satan” who may or may not be a criminal mastermind, a supernatural fiend, the devil himself, or some combination of all those things. As they make their way through odd rooms they encounter an imp, a dwarf, an ape-like man, a gorilla, Satan’s Mistress and “the Spider”. Finally they are tested with the Seven Footprints which could lead to fabulous wealth and freedom or servitude to Satan…and maybe Death! Originally released in both silent and partial sound versions only the silent one (long thought lost as well) survives.

      I get the not being a horror fan. I wasn’t one either.. for many many years and recently with the horror sort of shifting a little, becoming more psychological, has worked for me and now I really like it. 😀 I still don’t watch the old jump scare ones. 😀

    I watched IT Chapter 2 recently, so I can now say. I am not a fan of the IT movies at all. I don’t even think it’s scary nor make a lot sense. It’s just them throwing every “scary” thing they think is scary on a wall and hope it sticks.

    I do want to watch Hereditary, heard it’s good.
