Thursday Movie Picks: School

With September nearing, school is on many of our minds. For me it’s not necessarily about starting school or having somebody to send to school but mostly the idea of starting fresh. I feel like the energy from summer just gives fall a nice push. Anyway for today’s theme I went with movies that revolve around school. As always I added my own little theme within a theme.

3. NEVER BEEN KISSED (1999)

This is such a strange concept for a movie and I think it wouldn’t fly well nowadays. But Drew Barrymore is charming here and for some reason it just works. I have only fond memories of this movie and I think once this post goes up, I’ll be revisiting it too. Ah, the plot is that a reporter goes back to high school. She is there undercover to research for a story. As the title says, she’s never been kissed and there is a very handsome teacher involved… who thinks she is underage. Talk about strange but also awwww so adorable concept for a movie.

2. SHE’S THE MAN (2006)

Even if I’ve recommended this before I’m shamelessly doing it again. She’s The Man is my guilty pleasure favourite teen movie. I had this on repeat while I was working at the blockbuster (yes, I was one of the last people to work there too since I quit to go to university just a few months before it closed down). I can quote She’s The Man with my roommate and even though we do it ironically, it’s still a movie with great memories. It has Amanda Bynes going disguised aka undercover to a new high school as a boy to play football. She as Sebastian has a roommate who happens to be played by Channing Tatum. By the way, Tatum shows off his comedic side here and it’s pretty awesome.

1. 21 JUMP STREET (2012)

We’re back with another Channing Tatum movie and this time he is letting his comedic side shine even brighter. The successful remake of 21 Jump Street has Tatum and Jonah Hill, a pair of not so good cops, going undercover to high school. It’s hilarious, the best of the bunch here today and the sequel is pretty good too. It is one of the few comedies I have fond memories looking back and I wouldn’t mind watching it again soon.

    Never Been Kissed is a fluffy throwaway of a film but Drew is endearing in it. I’ve forgotten most of She’s the Man but it was a pleasant watch at the time. I use to watch the Johnny Depp series 21 Jump Street so put off seeing the movie when I saw it was a comedy which the show wasn’t. But when I finally got around to it the film was much more enjoyable than I expected.

    I did a theme within the theme too. Off to boarding school we go!

    Mädchen in Uniform (1931)-Still reeling from the death of her mother teenage Manuela (Hertha Thiele) is sent to a German boarding school run by the autocratic Fräulein von Nordeck (Emilia Unda). Grieving and angry Manuela at first keeps to herself but is slowly drawn out of her shell by sympathetic young teacher Elizabeth von Bernburg (Dorothea Wieck). But when Manuela’s fondness for her teacher turns into a romantic attachment, it becomes a school-wide scandal. The film caused an uproar upon its release due to its compassionate view towards lesbianism.

    The Happiest Days of Your Life (1950)-During World War II St. Swithins all-girls school is evacuated from London to avoid the Blitz. Due to a clerical error the female students and staff are relocated to the Nutborne Boys School. When the headmaster, Wetherby Pond (Alastair Sim) finds out he hits the ceiling but when he realizes there is nothing to be done about it he and St. Swithins headmistress Muriel Whitchurch (Margaret Rutherford) agree to keep their mixed-sex campus a secret to avoid disturbing the parents. However they find it hard to deceive visiting inspectors and hilarity ensues.

    A Little Princess (1939)-When the wealthy Captain Crewe (Ian Hunter) is called to serve in the Boer War he places his young daughter Sara (Shirley Temple) in the exclusive Miss Minchin’s School for Girls. Everything is rosy for a time but when word arrives that the captain has been killed in action and his property seized Sara, reduced to penury, is forced to become a servant at the school living in a tiny attic room. Belittled and tormented by several of the girls especially the cruel Lavinia (Marcia Mae Jones) Sara believes her father to be alive and haunts the hospitals looking for him.

    Oh man! I loved watching She’s the Man! Amanda Bynes was so hilarious in that movie!

    I really need to re-watch Never Been Kissed. I remember loving it when it was released, but now I’m like…. teacher falling for who he thinks is an underage girl? Errrr…

    Also, She’s the Man is amazing. That movie cracks me up so much.

      I rewatched it the other day and it was a bit more cringe than I remembered but still sweet. The concept is yes, a bit weird but he didn’t do anything really he was just… impressed by her and her knowledge.
      Glad to see She’s the Man fans here! 😀

    Nice picks! I haven’t seen Never Been Kissed in a long time, but I remember really liking it. Drew Barrymore was so cute. Though there’s nothing super problematic about the plot, I agree that it probably wouldn’t work the same today.

    I forgot how much I loved She’s the Man. That film was such a staple for my teenage self and definitely kick started my seemingly never ending crush on Channing Tatum haha.

    You know, I wish I would have thought of Never Been Kissed because it does air on the side of ewww but there have been more than one film that did the same thing like The Major and the Minor and Margie(love to watch that one again and she keeps losing her bloomers). I have not seen She’s The man but I am willing to give it a try. I can’t stand Jonah Hill so I have put off seeing 21 Jump Street but maybe I will give it a try.

    “I can do this! I am a dude! I am a hunky dude! I’m a badass hunky dude” That is a great line. I enjoyed the hell out of that film. Never Been Kissed not so much as there’s just a lot of things about that bothered me.

    I like Never Been Kissed. It is soo cute.
    She’s the Man is a miss for me. Just never really found it funny.
    21 Jump Street I really enjoyed and would like to see again as well. I have yet to see the sequel.
