Thursday Movie Picks Seven Deadly Sins Edition: Envy

We are on the fourth sin this year and I’m in the middle of my 10 For 10 marathon! Yes, today’s Thursday Movie Picks is going up extra early because ya girl is posting again later tonight. Today marks already the 7th post so it shall be all over on Sunday and we can go back to regular schedule. Enough of that, today we are talking about envy. And guys, I have the perfect envy recommendations and as always, a theme within a theme!

3. 13 GOING ON 30 (2004)

This is a movie about a teen girl envying the grown ups, wanting to be somebody she is not. All she wants to be is an adult because well, being an adult is better. At its core, it’s another wish movie but it has so much heart. It’s one of those movies that doesn’t get enough credit. Yes it’s cheesy, yes it’s silly but it has younger Mark Ruffalo being all adorable and it makes it all worth it. Also, it also proves that it’s pointless to envy the adults as a kid, since being a kid is a lot more fun… and your parents still pay the bills for you.

2. A CINDERELLA STORY (2004)

The evil step-sisters! That’s the whole point here I guess. Cinderella is a well known fairy tale and it is basically about an evil step-mother and her two teen daughters who envy Cinderella. Or in this case, Sam. This movie isn’t good, it’s not the worst either tho because there’s the iconic quote (the one in the gif) that encapsulates envy perfectly. There’s always a hint of respect but it’s buried under jealousy.

1. MEAN GIRLS (2004)

Finally, it’s the essential teen movie of the 00’s – Mean Girls. A movie about a group of girls everyone envies, the ones who have it all, the Plastics. In some ways the envy here is everywhere around the trio but I think essentially it’s about Cady wanting Regina’s ex boyfriend. I guess I’m stretching the theme here a little but hey, I would bet my money on it, that in high school, you envied somebody and what they represented. It’s perfectly underlined here. Plus, Amy Poehler’s character for sure envies her daughter. Oh and the theme within a theme, well all these movies are technically teen movies, and all came out in 2004.

        Although I love the Thriller dance scene in 13 going on 30, nothing can beat Mean Girls! 😀

    These are great. I was just talking to someone about The Cinderella Story recently because I can still sing that Hilary Duff Anywhere But Here song that played during the credits word for word. lol

    Love your theme within the theme! All very enjoyable movies. Of the three I liked Mean Girls best.

    I almost went with Mean Girls as well but assuming it would be popular I moved on to other choices.

    Purple Noon (1960)-Tom Ripley (Alain Delon) travels to Europe to visit his friend, wealthy layabout Phillipe Greenleaf (Maurice Ronet) and his fiancée Marge (Marie Lafort). What Phillipe doesn’t know is that Tom is being paid by Phillipe’s father to persuade his son to return home. Arriving in Italy he insinuates himself into their lives but when he is unsuccessful in his mission the father cuts him off. Seeing the lifestyle the pair lead Tom becomes consumed with envy as well as lust for Phillipe which he’s willing to acquire by any means he deems necessary. The basis for Matt Damon’s The Talented Mr. Ripley.

    Amadeus (1984)-Child prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) is a vastly talented composer with the ability to create masterworks with little to no effort but also an immature undisciplined hedonist. He incurs the enmity of Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) who though he is the Viennese court composer is a middling talent. Consumed with envy Salieri becomes obsessed with Mozart’s downfall but his schemes lead to dire consequences for both men. Loaded with great music, set design and performances both men were Oscar nominated with Abraham winning the statue.

    Single White Female (1992)-Having just broken her engagement from fiancé Sam (Steven Weber) Allison Jones (Bridget Fonda) advertises for a new roommate when Sam moves out. Mousy Hedra “Hedy” Carlson (Jennifer Jason Leigh) answers the ad, moves in and the young women quickly form a bond. But Allison doesn’t realize that Hedy is unstable and envious of her life which she slowly starts to imitate. When Allison begins to reconsider her engagement Hedy’s grip on reality slips away and Allison has the fight of her life on her hands.

      Ah thanks, at this point, I should stop saying I have a theme within a theme because I almost always do. 😀
      It would have been cool to match with Mean Girls, I think it would have been a TMP first. I have heard of your picks but I don’t think I’ve seen them. :/

    I’ve seen all three and enjoyed them all but my favourite, which I also picked, is Mean Girls. I used to watch it all the time when I was younger and I so wanted to be Cady lol

      Of course! I had no doubt Mean Girls would be a popular pick this week. I can see that, I was a huge Lindsay Lohan fan growing up and it’s a shame she partied her talents away… :/

    I have seen the first one which is much better than I thought it would be. I have not seen the other 2 but, one day, I will see mean Girls because that film seems to pop up everywhere whatever the theme.

    I’ve seen all. I remember very little of A Cinderella Story.

    13 Going on 30 – The movie is fun. Anyway I never got why kids want to be older too. You get to be a kid for such a short time, you should enjoy it, and in comparison you get to be old for a much much longer time. As they say youth is wasted on the young.
