Thursday Movie Picks: Fashion World

Yaaas! This is my kind of topic, you guys, and it didn’t take me long to find recommendations for this one. I sat down, saw the topic, and was like, alright, here are three movies every fashion lover should watch, like, right now!

I will say this, last year I recommended two of my favourite fashion documentaries, The September Issue and The First Monday in May, so I won’t recycle them for this week. But these two are still highly recommended nonetheless.

1. BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK, 2010

The late Bill Cunningham was one of the most known names in fashion photography, and he was especially talented at capturing street style. He lived a simple life, stripped from comfort, in a tiny apartment filled with his work, and worked until his death, taking pictures, loving every minute of it. If you watch this documentary, which I hope you do, expect to be emotional by the end of it, it is absolutely beautiful.

2. DIANA VREELAND: THE EYE HAS TO TRAVEL, 2011

And here is another documentary that will give you a great insight into the fashion world, one based on Diana Vreeland, editor of Harpers Bazaar and Vogue. And when Anna Wintour was there to discover the celebrity culture, Vreeland was there before her, celebrating quirks and uniqueness of people, and exploring the fun of fashion.

3. THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, 2006

Though my love for the fashion movies mainly consists of documentaries, The Devil Wears Prada is the closest I think any movie came to capturing the essence of fashion. Granted, some of it is based on real life, but that’s what makes the movie special. Over the years it has become an iconic movie on its own right, and it definitely deserves a place among all the fashion documentaries I love.

    Interesting picks only one of which I’ve seen. Devil Wears Prada, along with Funny Face, looks to be one of the titles of the week. I wasn’t overly fond of Anne Hathaway in it, but then I’m not much of a fan of hers overall, but Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci were fun and of course this is one of Meryl Streep’s best recent performances.

    Both those documentaries sound great, I’ve already queued up the Bill Cunningham one and I’ll get to the Diana Vreeland one soon.

    I chose a doc too, since you like them I think you’d enjoy it and then two more obscure takes on fashion.

    Women He Undressed (2015)-Mix of documentary and reenactments tells the story of Australian born Hollywood wardrobe designer Orry-Kelly. THE major Warner Brothers designer throughout much of the Golden Age and a favorite of Bette Davis among others he also designed for films ranging from Some Like it Hot to Les Girls and Casablanca. Covers his often rocky early life-he was seriously involved with Cary Grant before either were famous, working in mob controlled nightclubs etc. though his successes and later struggles with alcohol laced throughout with interviews with those who knew and worked with him including Jane Fonda and Angela Lansbury. Directed by Gillian Armstrong.

    The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978)-High fashion photography Laura Mars (Faye Dunaway) is much in demand for her provocative layouts that have a violent often blood splattered tinge. She is climbing ever higher until she suddenly starts seeing actual murders through the eyes of the killer and he seems to be moving closer and closer to her. Stylish, with a theme song sung by Barbra Streisand, but rather sick this provided an early spotlight role for Tommy Lee Jones.

    Strip Nude for Your Killer (1975)-Italian giallo film of a leather clad and motorcycle helmeted killer who is wreaking havoc within the Albatross modeling agency systemically knocking off nearly everyone associated with it. Unsurprisingly based on the title full to the brim with nudity both female and to a lesser degree male as well grisly knife killings all in gaudily lit 70’s colors. A definite precursor to the slasher film craze that swept American films a few years later this bloodbath is set to a striking jazz score.

      Ooh, I haven’t heard of Women He Undresses! Watching it as soon as I get the chance!

      I think you’ll enjoy Bill Cunningham a lot. It’s a very subtle story of loneliness as well, which is what gets to me the most. IT has a similar scene to The September Issue, where Bill is talking to the camera, and you feel like he is the loneliest person in the world… I don’t know, it always gets me.

    I know very little about the fashion industry so i know nothing about your first two picks. Haven’t seen the Devil Wears Prada either….always assumed it won’t be my thing…

    Devil Wears Prada is a much bett film than I thought it would be and I always enjoy watching it. I haven’t seen the documentaries but I want to especially Diana Vreeland who was the inspiration for the Kay Thompson character in Funny Face.

    We got The Devil Wears Prada in common! and that’s where it ends lol
    Can’t agree more that TDWP has become the icon of fashion industry in cinema.

    I didn’t like The Devil Wears Prada a lot, but considering all the love it got this week I guess I’ll have to rewatch it.

    I think the Devil Wears Prada would be somewhere in my top 50 movies of all time. It’s insanely entertaining and rewatchable

    Nice picks! Love The Devil Wears Prada – the clothes, the cast, etc. It’s such a rom-com/dramedy classic and never gets old.
