The international Women’s Day is right around the corner, it’s tomorrow to be exact. It’s a day where women are celebrated. We should be celebrated, like everyone else, all year around but anyway… There’s a day that focuses especially on celebrating women. This year the theme of the day is “an equal world is an enabled world”. In Hollywood, the world equal has a strong meaning but mostly from a negative perspective. The conversation, as it has been for decades, has been about Hollywood not being equal: not to women, not to LGBTQ+ communities, not to people of colour. It’s sadly a conversation we will probably have for many years to come.
But as the theme for the international Women’s Day of 2020 is about equality, and the hope of a brighter future, I’d like to do just that. Look into the future. So instead of trying to focus on the negative, the lack of representation in the mainstream cinema, I’d like to look at the good. The improvements, the signs of hope. I’d like to focus on the positive today so it would be easier to feel more optimistic about what’s to come.
That in mind, I’m here to list 10 of my favourite female led movies. Movies that celebrate girl power and female friendship. I’m only listing movies that are directed by women and written by women! So sadly, I won’t be able to include Wonder Woman… as it was written my a man. Even though, it’s one badass girl power movie!

PS: I know I talked about equality before so I’d like to apologise that this list isn’t very diverse. I looked at my highest rated movies and then tried to fit them into the category I had set myself. Turns out, I limited myself into quite a non-diverse box. It makes me sad and disappointed at myself but I didn’t want to not shout out these great movies because of this. I’ll just know to set a better example in the future.
