Thursday Movie Picks: Meet the Parents

This post about meeting parents comes to you in a haste of trying to get organised… And I’m so far from organised. I get all my work stuff done, and then more things come up and I neglect my blog every week. But this weekend I will try to catch up with as much as I can! Anyway, here’s this week’s recommendations.

PS: New preliminary schedule for TMP 2019 is up, and it looks so good already! I also gave to theme recommendations which I think are awesome… but maybe it’s just me.

1. MEET THE PARENTS (2000)

Is this cheating? Probably. But it’s still the first movie that comes to mind with this theme, so it stays. Here we have the most iconic meet the parents set up and with Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro facing each other the comedy somehow writes itself. Definitely one of those classics that still has that 90’s vibe going, and is heart warningly funny!

2. THE BIG SICK (2017)

I watched this later than necessary because I should’ve jumped right in and join the conversation when it was all that people talked about. Anyway, this is a some what true story, or like pretty much the true story, of two people meeting. It’s funny, it’s pretty cool and very strange at times. And it has one hell of a meet the parents element!

3. BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985)

This is a stretch, but hear me out.. he meets his own parents, in the past! Right? Fits! I feel like it is perfect. And that’s all I’ll say because this movie needs no other words.

    We match on The Big Sick! Meet The Parents isn’t cheating, it’s honoring the theme. 😛 lol

    I LOVE Back to the Future!! Such a sense of fun and wonder with excellent performances from top to bottom but none better than Fox and Lloyd. Meet the Parents is fun up to a point but goes on too long.

    I’ve yet to see The Big Sick.

    I stuck to the lighter side of things this week.

    Lovers and Other Strangers (1970)-As young couple Mike and Susan (Michael Brandon & Bonnie Bedelia) go through their wedding festivities (rehearsal, ceremony and reception) a cauldron of familial lunacy swirls around them as they meet for the first time. VERY 70’s fashions and interior design is offset by a cast that includes Beatrice Arthur, Cloris Leachman, Gig Young, Anne Meara and in her screen debut Diane Keaton.

    The In-Laws (1979)-Nebbishy dentist Sheldon Kornpett (Alan Arkin) finds himself with major reservations to his daughter’s upcoming marriage after meeting her future father-in-law, Vincent Ricardo (Peter Falk). At first thinking Vince is mobbed up he is no less distressed when Vince reveals that he’s actually a CIA agent investigating an international counterfeiting plot, and that he will need Sheldon’s help. Next thing he knows Sheldon is off on a crazy adventure.

    My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)-Toula (Nia Vardalos) is a sweet, somewhat frumpy 30ish Greek girl who works in her family’s restaurant and is dominated by her parents. Frustrated by being stuck in place she pulls herself together, goes to work in her aunt’s travel agency and meets school teacher Ian Miller (John Corbett) and they quickly get serious. That’s where the trouble starts since Ian isn’t Greek, no problem for Toula but a huge one for her family especially when they decide to marry. Her boisterous clan basically take over the title event while Toula and Ian try to stand up against the onslaught. Low budget good natured comedy with a sunny outlook made a mint on its release.

    I was wondering if someone would pick Meet The Parents which fits perfectly and, yes, it is funny. The urn scene is very funny and so is the cat. I haven’t seen The Big Sick but I want to rectify that now. Back to the Future is a great and inventive pick!
