Happy New Year fellow bloggers and readers! 2017 has finally arrived, and though some posted their best and worst of 2016 last year, some, like me, are taking their time to reflect, contemplate and fuss over these things a little while longer. I for one was certain I was going to watch or read at least one great movie or an amazing book to shake up my 2016 list which sort of happened, but not really. So to start off this quite extensive three part histology event of 2016, let us look at the disappointing and bad at first.
DISAPPOINTING BOOKS OF 2016
I exceeded my reading challenge by reading 69 books in 2016, 3 of which I didn’t finish. My DNF’s were Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, The New Guy by Amy Spalding and Lair of the Lion by Christine Feehan.
10. The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson
Well, young adult contemporary can go wrong sometimes, as it did with this one.
9. The Other Guy by Cat Attwell
LGBTQ+ books are my guilty pleasure but sometimes I just pick up the wrong ones.
8. The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
This took me ages to read because I kept putting it down.
7. The Manifesto on How to be Interesting by Holly Bourne
Annoying and naive main characters are the worst!
6. City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
The series got better after this one.
5. Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton
The most overhyped book of 2016 in my opinion.
4. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
I think I missed the point of this book… I’m sorry.
3. Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill
Guess what, I don’t really like horror, not just movies but books as well. Heart-Shaped Box was a great disappointment from the beginning, because I didn’t really connect with any of the characters. So rooting for them was simply impossible and therefore there was no excitement, fear nor thrill.
2. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
Granted, I read most of The Mortal Instrument series in 2016, which means I kept at it even after such a disappointing opening. The thing is, Clare’s writing improves throughout the series, and the later books are actually good. I’ve heard even better things about her following series. So though I list City of Bones as disappointing, it is worth to push through for what is to come.
1. The Girl in 6E by A. R. Torre
This book was going around the Internet like wildfire, everyone talked about how interesting, different and thrilling it was. I hated every minute of it. The plot was ridiculous and with such great characters as Dexter out there in the world, the psychopathic Deanna came off as stupid, boring and painful to read about.
WORST MOVIES OF 2016
Compared to previous years, I only watched around 80 movies this year, and many of them I had already seen. This list could most likely include many other really bad movies from 2016 but I think I was lucky to avoid so many of them. Such as Gods of Egypt, Warcraft, Zoolander 2, Passengers and The 5th Wave, for which I stupidly spent almost 10 minutes of my life before I gave up.
10. X-Men: Apocalypse
Why do I spend so much time on the X-Men franchise is a mystery to me.
9. Suicide Squad
Turns out, it wasn’t the worst of 2016 but it sure was the biggest disappointment!
8. Valentine Ever After
A Lifetime movie because why not torture myself.
7. The Boss
Stop, Melissa McCarthy, just stop.
6. High-Rise
Only 2015 movie I’m including in this list because my god, it was so bad!
5. Now You See Me 2
They ruined it, they ruined the fun and I hate them for it.
4. The Secret Life of Pets
It’s a rare thing for an animation to be so boring, yet this one succeeded.
3. Bad Moms
Now, this one was a rather successful comedy of 2016 and it’s funny to think back to it now, after months of seeing it. Funny because I still don’t like it, and yet, it’s getting a sequel and I’m sitting here and thinking, why? To be fair, it did add another dimension to raunchy comedies by featuring all female lead characters, but How to be Single, in my opinion, was better at it.
2. Office Christmas Party
Another comedy to add to my growing list of comedies I hate. Yet, what would be a list of Worst Movies if not for the bad comedies that seem to dominate my list this year? Apparently a short one, so I’m almost proud of myself for watching so many bad comedies this year. So, turns out, Office Christmas Party is good for something, it got itself high on a worst movies of 2016 pedestal and it deserves it.
1. Independence Day: Resurgence
Is it too bold to call it the worst sequel/revival ever made? I don’t think so because Independence Day: Resurgence was crap from the start. Not only did they recast Mae Whitman, huge mistake, they literally wasted no time to make the plot into a marathon of idiocy. There are so many things wrong with this movie I can’t even talk about it without loosing my nerve. Worst movie of 2016 by a mile!
